A selection of flat things to include in a card for a Christian

14 Flat Things to Include in a Card to a Christian

As Christians, sending happy mail is a simple, easy way to remind someone we’re thinking of them. You can send a card for so many different occasions – birthdays, baptisms, the birth of a baby, an engagement, a wedding, moving house, launching a business, or starting a new job. If they’re in the ministry, things like an ordination card or a licensing card are also lovely.

Sending Christian greeting cards allows us to build each other up with kind words, and do as Paul says to both the Ephesians and the Colossians:

‘Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.’ - Ephesians 5:19

‘Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.’ - Colossians 3:16

Christian Greeting Cards

If you’re searching for the perfect card for your Christian friend or loved one, I have a range of options to choose from. My Christian Fruit of the Spirit card is a personal favourite as it’s a thoughtful way to encourage a brother or sister in Christ. It’s also blank inside, making it suitable for any occasion or to send ‘just because’.

Greeting cards are already meaningful but adding a few flat treasures can make your note feel like a mini care package, all for the price of a stamp. Just make sure your letter doesn’t exceed 5mm in thickness.

14 Flat Things to Include in a Card to a Christian

1. Christian Bookmark

Enjoyed by anyone who loves reading and perfect for popping in a Bible, bookmarks are easy to add into a card or letter. I have a growing collection of Christian bookmarks decorated with words for encouragement in the faith.

2. A Mini Scripture Card or Memory Verse Card

Hope & Ginger has a lovely collection of little cards on various topics. We also have The Biggest Story verse cards, which would make a wonderful addition to snail mail.

3. Bible Tabs

I love the ones from Doodling Faith and Dotk Design. As well as being beautiful and flat, they’re helpful for navigating Scripture.

4. Prayer List Card

Everybody needs somewhere to jot down prayer requests. I have a printable prayer list you can download and print as many times as you like on thick card or regular printer paper.

5. Sticky Tabs or Post-It Notes

These come in a range of cool colours and they’re handy for marking passages or adding notes to the Bible.

6. A Short, Printed Devotion

Include a couple of paragraphs from something that struck you, spoke to you, or made you think of the recipient. You can scan or photocopy the devotion book you’re reading or tear out a page if it’s from something like the Daily Bread. If you found the devotion online, print it out. Finally, if you’ve heard something incredible in a podcast, talk or sermon, writing out notes yourself is also a lovely idea.

7. Promise Cards

Write out a few promises from God (e.g., Psalm 46:1, Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28). These can be particularly meaningful and reassuring if you know your friend is going through something specific.

8. Handwritten Blessings

Similar to promise cards, write a few short lines of encouragement, like a blessing you are praying over them. This works especially well for a new year, a birthday or a baptism, but can be done to mark any occasion or just because. Pray on what to write so God can use you and your words.

9. A Typed or Handwritten Letter Insert

Whenever you send a greeting card, including a separate letter or mini note is a lovely touch. As well as updating them on any personal news, you can include some of the items listed above.

10. Tea Bag Tags with Verses

Attach a Bible verse to a nice tea bag. It can be something fun, encouraging or a verse you’re currently memorising.

11. A Handwritten Recipe Card

Go for something they can make to show hospitality like a favourite comforting recipe or a sweet treat they could share with their home group.

12. Worship Song Playlist Card

For those who are old enough to remember, this is an up-to-date version of a mix tape or a mix CD. Gather a selection of worship songs you love or songs you’ve recently been singing in church. They can be as feel-good or as reflective as you like. Create a playlist on Spotify, share the link with them, and include a preview of the songs or the entire list. Make it fun and funky like those old school mix tapes!

13. Art Postcard with a Biblical Scene or Quote

Share your favourite painting or an artist you love. Choose something they might want to keep and frame.

14. Calligraphy Quote

Along the same lines as the art postcard, why not practice writing your favourite verse in calligraphy or brush lettering?

Bonus Ideas - Make it Personal

  • Choose quality over quantity. One beautiful, considered item beats a handful of junk they will never use.
  • Go for something that aligns with their personality and tastes, not just generic ‘Christian’ stuff. I like to keep notes in my phone contacts of things friends have mentioned they like. Their favourite flower, their go-to hot drink etc. This helps me ensure I choose something they’ll love.
  • Personalise whatever you include with your card. For example, choose a verse you know has meaning for the recipient. Handwrite it and include their name.
