From Prayer to Product – How I Design Meaningful Christian Greeting Cards

There’s something special about finding just the right card. The one that says exactly what’s on your heart. The one that’s perfect for the person you’re planning to give it to. As someone who designs Christian greeting cards, this is always my aim – to create something that helps you encourage, comfort, and celebrate others in a way that feels genuine and faith-filled.

Today, I’m going to take you behind the scenes and share how my products come to life, from the very first idea to the finished card in your hands. I’ll warn you now, it’s not a clean and simple process. I am an artist, after all! The way my studio looks most of the time is very similar to my creative process – messy!

How I Design Meaningful Christian Greeting Cards

1. Inspiration and Ideas

This stage rarely looks the same from one product to the next. I have a folder in my Notes app with random sentences and snippets of ideas that have caught my attention. I also record things customers have mentioned looking for at markets. It’s a very random document, and I sometimes look at it and have no idea what I was thinking!

The majority of these ideas do not come from sitting at a desk, looking at a blank wall. I am inspired by walks, sermons, scripture, podcasts, audiobooks, watching people fly around the moon, my hobbies, my garden, and things my children say and do.

Sometimes it’s conversations with friends or customers. Often, people will ask for specific cards. Three recent examples of this include:

  • A birthday card with scripture, but for a non-believer – something gentle and subtle, but still with faith expressed.
  • A card with Psalm 23 on it.
  • A Christian card for exam time.

These requests stay with me, and I’m always looking for gaps to plug in both my own card collection and in the Christian greeting cards available here in the UK. I want to ensure you can find beautifully designed Christian cards that point to Jesus for every circumstance in your life and the lives of your loved ones.

This could be why I don’t really have one set, defined style! My inspiration is so varied, and I love bringing that variety into my creative work. However, once I’m inspired, I do have a set way of working.

2. Words

Based on one of the ideas in front of me, I usually begin with a sentence (frequently a pun) or a Bible verse I want to include. After refining the wording, I hand-letter the sentence to check it can be read in my unique typography.

I’m looking for wording that feels gentle, encouraging, and rooted in truth, and I love to include humour and light-heartedness whenever I can. I will die on the hill of faith design not needing to be serious and dry. We have been given a sense of humour, we have been given the ability to laugh, and Jesus is where the joy is, so let’s make that part of who we are as Christians!

3. Design

On to the design stage. This is where I start to bring the idea to life visually. This part really depends on my mood and on how keen I am to draw and paint! I’ll consider carefully how the design supports the message rather than distracts from it.

Some days, I’m drawn to clean, calm layouts and soft, thoughtful colour palettes. Nothing too busy, just something that feels peaceful and easy to connect with. On other days, I want to go all out and draw a detailed, colourful landscape. Once I have a direction, I develop it digitally, adjusting the layout, spacing, and colours until everything feels balanced and intentional.

I often re-use older illustrations, especially ones that were one-time use in calendars. I loved doing this recently with Christian wedding cards and birthday cards for husbands (which were requested by a stockist who noticed there wasn’t much choice).

4. Materials and Printing

Next, I decide which type of cardstock I would like the design printed on. I use two different types, a 300gsm lightly textured card which is ideal for cleaner, ‘empty’ designs, and a 350gsm smooth uncoated cardstock which brings out colours beautifully and works really well for fully illustrated cards.

The quality of the cardstock is so important to me. It needs to feel substantial in your hands, and I only work with suppliers who align with the values of my business. At the moment, I use one printing business for my greeting cards. They’re based in Northern Ireland, about 5 miles from my home, which is awesome.

I also bought a printer about 18 months ago, so I can print some of the cards myself. This gives me even more control over the finished product. Finding the right blanks has prevented me from printing all my cards myself but given how long it takes me to print them, I am happy with the balance I have at the moment.

5. The Finished Product

My favourite moment is opening a box full of finished cards. There’s something very special about holding a product that once existed only as an idea, knowing it’s now ready to be sent, shared, and hopefully used to encourage someone else at just the right time.
