What to Write in an Adult Baptism Card

Baptism is an important step in the life of a Christian. As well as representing their commitment to follow Jesus Christ, it’s an opportunity to share their faith and what it means to them, and it’s a chance for you to show your support.

Why Send a Baptism Card?

Baptism cards are an important part of acknowledging the event and showing support for your loved one. It provides the perfect place to write a message of love and encouragement. Baptism cards are also a great way to share your faith, express your excitement, or even just to say, ‘I'm happy for you’.

Baptism, and baptism cards, are not just for babies - they're also used at adult baptisms, sometimes called a believer’s baptism. I was baptised when I was 16, on Easter Sunday, 2001. I remember the day, but I also remember the messages of love and support I received. Over 20 years later, I still have a box with a few of the special cards people gave me. I may be more sentimental than most, but you cannot overstate how meaningful a card sent at the right time can be. If you’re able to attend, give the baptised friend a card on the day. If you cannot, send one to arrive around the date of their baptism.

What to Write in an Adult Baptism Card

If you're wondering what to write inside your card, words of rejoicing, celebration, delight and encouragement are always well received. Here are some more specific ideas:

  • Share your regret at not being able to attend but assure them of your prayers and support.
  • Include some thoughts about what baptism means to you personally.
  • Share how excited you are that they've decided to take such a huge step in their journey with their faith.
  • If applicable, you might want to talk about how different things have been since they became a Christian. Has there been any noticeable change in their behaviour? Have they learned anything new?
  • Talk about how excited you are to see God’s work in their life.
  • Include a written down prayer that you are praying for them.
  • It is always so valuable to hear from more seasoned Christians, so cheer them on with words from the Bible.

Bible Verses to Include in an Adult Baptism Card

I would suggest sharing a verse from scripture that has been a blessing and encouragement in your own walk with the Lord. Here are some ideas to get you started, including a bible verse that has remained a favourite of mine since receiving it in a baptism card of my own.

1 Timothy 4:12 – Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

(This is a good verse for a teenager being baptised. It really encouraged and empowered me to be a Christian and not be shy.)

Deuteronomy 31:6 - Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

Psalm 91 which begins ‘Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”’

Mark 1:4 - And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

1 Samuel 2:30b - For those who honour me I will honour, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

John 12:26 - If anyone serves me, the Father will honour him. (Jesus speaking)

I have a lovely collection of believer’s baptism cards (as well as some baby baptism cards), which you can find here >>> Adult Baptism Cards

It’s difficult, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would be my best selling ‘No Ordinary Dip in the Water’ baptism card. I think it has a slight Lord of the Rings feel to it – you can imagine Gandalf saying this!
