My Favourite Bible Verses for Every Occasion

Two people sitting side by side hold their bibles open to read

The Bible isn't just a collection of stories from the past – it is God’s word, written by real men. Between its pages, we can find truth, comfort and hope in all seasons of life. Whether you need support in a difficult moment, the perfect scripture to memorise when you feel anxious, meaningful words to share in a card, or encouragement for someone going through a difficult time, God's Word has something to say.

In this guide, you'll find a Bible verse for every occasion, helping you celebrate life's joyful moments, find comfort during challenging seasons, and point yourself and others back to God's love and faithfulness.

I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. - Psalm 119:162

Scripture for When You Feel Sad

Sadness is something we all experience at different points in life, and it’s not wrong to feel this way. Whether you're grieving a loss, feeling disappointed, overwhelmed, lonely, or simply having a difficult day, God sees your pain and cares deeply about what you're going through.

One of the comforting truths of Scripture is that we don't have to hide our emotions from God. In Psalm 109, David pours out his emotions and, in his anger, says things that aren’t right, but God can handle it.

If you're feeling sad today, pour out your heart in prayer. These Bible verses can help lift your eyes to God's promises and remind you of His unfailing love and presence, even in the hardest moments.

Cast all your cares on him, because he cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:7

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you. - 1 Peter 5:10

The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. - Psalm 9:9

Psalm 13 is a great read in times of sadness. It begins with David pouring out his heart and ends with his eyes lifted to God, worshipping him.

Bible Verses for Grief and Loss

The Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. - Psalm 34:18

I will turn their mourning into laughter and their sadness into joy; I will comfort them. - Jeremiah 31:13

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. - Isaiah 40:29

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:19

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. - Revelation 21:4

Scripture for Hard Times

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. - Psalm 23:4

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23

If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you. - Psalm 139:11-12

When You Don’t Know What to Pray

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. - Romans 8:26-27

Bible Verses About Guidance

But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands. - Psalm 31:14

We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you. - 2 Chronicles 20:12 (I have this written on my prayer journal for this very reason!)

In his heart, man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. - Proverbs 16:9

All of Psalm 37 – look at the outcome of the evil vs the righteous – even though it may look like they’re getting away with things, they ultimately will face justice, and their actions will catch up with them.

Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. - Psalm 37:3-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counsellors there is safety. - Proverbs 11:14

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. - Psalm 119:105

Bible Verses About Courage

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! - Psalm 27:13-14

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Bible Verses For When You’re Feeling Anxious

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6-7

When anxiety was great within me, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. - Psalm 94:19

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! - Luke 12:22-24

Bible Verses About Peace

I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. - John 16:33

Bible Verses About Purpose

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31

Bible Verses About Faith

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. - Hebrews 11:1

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9

For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you. - Matthew 17:20
