What to Write in a Christian Graduation Card
Why Send a Christian Graduation Card?
Rejoice with those who rejoice! What an accomplishment to graduate from secondary school or university! These are big moments in the life of a young person, and we, as older folks who have gone before, get to celebrate with them, acknowledge the hard work they’ve put in, and give a card to mark the moment.
I have a lovely, thoughtful collection of Christian Graduation cards which you can find here >>> Christian Graduation Cards
What to Write in a Christian Graduation Card
Make sure to write as personally as possible. Cards are all the more special when the person receiving them feels seen and known as they read the message. Some of it can be general but adding in meaningful and specific words will make this card one they’ll want to keep for years to come. Beyond this, there are a few approaches you can take – choose your favourite:
1. Joyful and Affirming
Affirm and celebrate their achievement and all the hard work they’ve put in.
‘Congratulations on your graduation! All your hard work has paid off, and it’s such a joy to celebrate this moment with you.
‘The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.’ – Psalm 126:3
We are praying this is just the beginning of all He has in store for you.’
2. Celebratory with Purpose
Focus on the wider purpose of the achievement, while still celebrating with them.
‘Congratulations, graduate! What an incredible achievement — so much to celebrate today.
‘Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.’ – Proverbs 16:3
Excited to see where God leads you next!’
Or be more future focused with something like:
‘Congratulations on graduating! Your dedication and perseverance have been amazing to see.
‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord… ‘plans to give you hope and a future.’ – Jeremiah 29:11
So excited for all that lies ahead.'
3. Light, Joyful and Encouraging
Include a sweet reminder to give thanks to God and that this graduation is a blessing from the Lord because we can do nothing without Him.
‘You did it - congratulations! This is such a special milestone and so worth celebrating.
‘May the Lord bless you and keep you.’ – Numbers 6:24
Praying His blessing over every step ahead.’
Beyond Graduation - Christian Going to University Cards
Going to university or leaving home for the first time can be a daunting prospect, so writing a card is a lovely idea. This will help the young person feel loved and know that you are behind them, cheering them on and praying for them.
I have a couple of card designs specifically for young people going to university here and here and below you’ll find some ideas for what to write inside.
First, make sure they know how much they mean to you, and how you have loved watching them grow. Assure them of your prayers as they fly the nest and head off to be an adult in a new location. You could include some verses of encouragement and assurance:
- ‘Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ - Isaiah 41:10
- ‘It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’ - Deuteronomy 31:8
- ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ - Joshua 1:9
- ‘I am with you, always.’ - Matthew 28:20
I also love 1 Timothy 4:12 for young people – it says, ‘Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.’
Finally, here are some verses that will encourage the recipient to pray because God hears and answers:
- ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ - Philippians 4:6-7
- ‘Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.’ - Jeremiah 33:3
If you’re keen to include a treat or gift of some kind, you could add in a couple of simple, student-friendly recipes. One of my favourite easy treats to make for friends is raspberry and white chocolate blondies. Failing that, I’m sure you have a go-to pasta recipe you could share. Alternatively, I’m sure they’d appreciate a voucher for a supermarket, restaurant or coffee shop for them to enjoy while they settle in.
