How to Send Meaningful Christian Birthday Cards That Point to Jesus
Share
Since founding And Hope Designs, I’ve been slowly building my collection of Christian birthday cards because I felt many of the designs available online and in Christian bookshops were outdated or American in style. This could be precisely what you're looking for, but if you’re anything like me, you’d probably prefer something fun, young and contemporary. The kind of card you’d find in a cute independent bookstore, but with a Christian theme or message. It might even feature a verse of scripture. This is the gap in the market I’m working hard to fill.
In 2024, I designed five new Christian birthday cards to add to my collection. This year, I’m planning to launch even more, including a range of cards perfect for those big milestone birthdays. I also offer a variety of Christian greeting cards that are suitable for birthdays. You can browse the full collection of Christian cards here.
There are lots of other talented artists adding more contemporary Christian birthday cards to the market. You can find some lovely options via Cheerfully Given and Arked, two Christian marketplaces that vet their sellers well. I’ve always found their products to be reliably high quality.
Once you’ve found the perfect Christian birthday card, here’s how to make it even more meaningful…
What to Write in a Christian Birthday Card
I love receiving birthday cards that contain a personal message, especially one that points to Jesus. This means writing more than just ‘happy birthday, have a great day’!
Some of the Christian birthday cards I’ve designed feature sentiments you could use to inspire your message inside. For example, ‘Today we celebrate you and all that God has made you!’. Here, you could note down the things you love about how God made the recipient, describing their best personality traits and the aspects of their character that make them a person you love being around.
This would also work well in the birthday card I designed based on Zephaniah 3:17 – my favourite Bible verse as a teenager. ‘He rejoices over you with singing’ is such an encouraging sentiment. How wonderful to know that God is happy with the way he made you!
Of course, you could use this approach in any birthday card you are writing to a Christian. Think about how God made them, how he sees them, and write that down.
Alongside this, sharing something meaningful to you and the recipient is a great idea. You could reminisce on an experience you shared recently or sometime in the past. If they are a family member, include other relatives in the message. For example, ‘I am so proud of the daughter-in-law you are – I thank God my son married you, and delight in watching the beautiful mum you are to my grandchildren.’
Bible Verses to Include in a Christian Birthday Card
The scriptures are full of encouraging, supportive words that are perfect for celebrating birthdays. From hope, perspective and positivity for the future to beautiful reminders of God’s love, here are some of my favourites…
Matthew 28:20 – I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Numbers 6: 24-26 – The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
Psalm 118:6 – The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?
1 Timothy 4:8 – For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
James 1:2-3 – Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
2 Corinthians 4:16 – Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
If you have a fun relationship and are looking for a verse that will make them laugh, here are two that are perfect for a birthday:
Joshua 13:1 – The LORD said to him, "You are very old”.
Isaiah 46:4 – Even to your old age and grey hairs, I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you, and I will rescue you.
This is hugely encouraging for someone in their elderly years, and very funny in a 30th birthday card!
Christian Birthday Cards for Children
If you choose a fun, bright card for a child that’s attractive to them, I believe they’ll be more inclined to pay attention to the message inside.
I recommend including a simple sentence reminding them of God’s love for them. You could also tell them you’ll be praying for them over the next 12 months and include a short bible verse of encouragement. I like to choose one they may have memorised in the past.
Slugs and Bugs is one of my favourite resources for easy scripture memorisation through music. A lot of children being raised in Christian homes will be familiar with their songs, so you could choose a verse they’re already used to singing. Though maybe not Bring Me a Heifer – that could require a little more explanation!
